Katerina Filimonova's Drunken Monkeys
So a monkey walks into a bar...
For Katerina Filimonova that is the punchline. Her playful series of paintings introduce us to a troop of candy-coloured apes knocking back pints in their local pub. Whilst depicting the absurd, Filimonova retains the a feeling of the familiar as the apes take on innately human positions; they lounge back in alcohol dazes, scan the room in a dominant entrance and then drunkenly scramble to the door when it all gets too much. None of us can deny the animalistic tendencies that alcohol awakens (we have all been unfortunate enough to see the club when the lights come on). Katerina takes these and parodies them in this delightful series.
Katerina lives and works in Odessa and has a long history of art education. She began painting at The Kostandi Odessa Art School where she studied art and later moved onto The Grekov Odessa State Art College. After graduating, Katerina moved away from art into a different field: Architecture, which she studied at The State Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture. Since then she has pursued a career in this field as well as engaging in design. It was not until 2010 that she returned to her passion of painting and hopes to show her first exhibit this year.
